Girlfriend – congrats – and I so know how you feel about those cycling shorts – as I tried on 5 of my own this weekend to figure out which one would work in public – (versus spin class) – I have found that the all black is WORSE than multi-panel colors – the colors DISTRACT the eye — but let’s hope the people behind you are not starting at our tush and are looking around more “up right” so to speak.
And speaking of TUSH – get yourself in some MBTS – the muscle-toning, calorie burning, posture improving shoes — it’s what you must wear – off the bike — GO ask Chris Carmichael himself — he is a big fan!

OMG how I howled when I read your blog. There are times when I look at myself in the mirror before heading out on a ride and I think “crap, now ain’t that a wierd thing to find on a bike”. Can you wear clogs with a biking ensemble? My point being, there is no other garment or accessory that will make those cycle shorts look good….none. Night cycling could be a possible option:-)

You’ll get used to the gear- I couldn’t believe the stuff either when I started a few moons ago and still feel a bit ridiculous from time to time (my favorite line “its just not a party till the guy in spandex shows up”), but eventually it just makes sense although bike shorts will never look good- ever. As for the jersey’s, there are some great, nondescript (ie cool!), options available. I’m not sure of women’s options, but Paul Smith has some good options (could crossover for you):
